Lesson 101

By voch

Yesterday, I encountered a near-death experience which gave me the shock of my life.

I was driving to Seremban when it was somewhat raining quite heavily. I would constantly bump into puddles of water and had to drive over it because the so-called old road to Seremban wasn’t entirely in a good condition. To tell you the truth, I decided not to take the highway because of the toll hike plus I wasn’t rushing so I thought I’d take a slow drive.

At this particular corner nearby a housing area in Mambau, I ran into this huge puddle of oil thinking it was water at approx 80km/hour and I tell you, shit happened. I lost control of my car and in my mind, I was telling myself… “Koyaklah, sure buang edy!” Imagine the panic attack I had when my car was drifting from left to right and vice versa. Within that very split second, I did my best and jammed the brake as hard as I could.

I saw several cars on the opposite lane trying to avoid me in the course of not wanting a collision which will then probably lead to an accident. Thanks to the creation of ABS and EBD which I’d like to think saved my life from the slippery surface, I finally managed to maneuver it back on track shortly after the drifting. I tried to calm myself down after that and drove as slowly and carefully as I could.

It was certainly a close encounter and I am thankful nothing horrible has happened. Lesson learnt.

Always remember to be extra extra careful everytime you stumble upon a puddle of water when driving under the rain.

  5. daniel yuanz Says:

dude, i heard somewhere they advice not to slam on the breaks once you run over a puddle of water, thats why it will buang… but then again, no idea what should one do instead, tekan minyak??? lolz… drive safe man!

voch: To slam or not? haha.. But I think ABS supposingly shud prevent any complete locking of the wheels when heavy braking takes place. Then again, life’s at stake terpaksa slam the bloody brake d haha. No choice

  6. Heidi Says:

gosh, tht was a close call! be careful k? glad u r safe and sound. :)

voch: Phew, am equally grateful nothing bad happened too.. Thankks di.

  7. narrowband Says:

Damn man it sure is dangerous to drive during heavy rain. You sure it wasn’t just rain water but some oil too? I think a huge puddle of water could give you the same kind of effect anytime, especially if you’re above 70kph. It is always safer to drive slowly and anticipate driving into pockets of puddles every now and then – I learnt that before but not through such a scary experience, thankfully. My tyres could not aquaplane quickly enough and I got quite a shock. Luckily I held on to the wheel (and dear life) with both hands, firm… at that time. Which brings me to my next point – always hold the steering wheel firm with both hands in anticipation of deep puddles.

voch: I’m quite confident it was a puddle of oil bcos my dad actually lodged a complaint of the oil spill from a nearby factory before a couple of years back (just about the same spot when I told him about the incident yesterday). It just didn’t occur to me at that point of time that I’d be so unlucky. Yeah bro, grab hold tight of the steering with both hands is really important to get a good grip esp when one’s taking a corner.

  8. Jayce Says:

Drive safely… BTW, which car are you using? Nice lo… :)

hey. haven’t been visiting yur blog lately and boy, i missed out quite alot!

that was a scary experience! i encountered one where a car lost control right next to me during heavy rain and fortunately, it didn’t banged to my car. i actually didn’t know that car lost control because of the heavy rain where all i see is a sea of blurred vision especially after that car skidded and spurred waters on my windshield. i only realized what happened after i see that car turned almost 180 degrees and i jerked to the left to avoid it hitting me.

from then on i never drive fast during rain because i might lose control like that car. if i didn’t encounter that, i’m sure i would still be risking my life by racing in the rain. *sigh*

voch: Heyya jess. Yr experience was pretty scary too – esp with the splash on yr windshield, but thank God noting happened right. hehe haf a nice day
